How does music affect people?

Specific Question

Does type music affect how much people remember on a memory test?

Hypothesis

Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that the subjects will remember more of the words when the Bach music is playing.
Rationale: I think this because all of my research proves that music with 60 BPM will stimulate the brain argo the subjects will remember more of the words while the bach music is playing. See graph below.

Detailed Procedure

1. Write 6 different sequences of 20 different words.

2. Hand out 15 permission slips to teens ages 13-14. Thur. 1 / 31 / 13

3. Permission slips need to be returned The 5 of march

5. Print out words (from step 1).

6. Collect Permission Slips that were handed out throughout steps 4 and 5.

7. Setup iPad for footage of experiment in Mrs Hill’s room.

8. Have someone take pictures with camera during experiment.

9. All together Give people with signed permission slips only 1 sequence of the words (from Step 1) for 30 seconds and ask them to memorize them, then take it away.

10. Ask people to write down words from the list (from Step 1) from memory on self provided paper and writing utensil, give them only one minute for writing the words.

11. Repeat steps 7-10 6 times on different days with different types of music (from step 4) each time during the memorizing.

Results
The average score for the trial with no music the first time was 27.2. The average score for the trial with the bach music playing was 33.3.The average score for the trial with Mumford and sons playing was 23.9. The average score for the trial with Psy playing was 34.4. The average score for the trial with the tokens playing was 15.0. The average score for the trial with no music the 2nd time was 31.7.

Conclusion

The experiment was designed to test the question Does Type of Music affect how much people remember on a memory test? the results show that the new hit single Gangnam style helped people remember the most out of the word given to them. The average score for the trial with no music the first time was 27.2 with the bach music playing it was 33.3 with Mumford and sons playing it was 23.9 with Psy playing it was 34.4 with the tokens playing it was 15.0 with no music playing the 2nd time it was 31.7.

Discussion

Background Research

1. Research has shown memory to be affected by many different factors. One of these factors is music, which has been found to stimulate parts of the brain.

2. Music as therapy is widely known -- the rhythms and melodies have been rehabilitative, helping treat many conditions.

3. Different types of music, however, may have varying degrees of effectiveness on memory depending on musical taste.

4. Baroque classical music is said to have mind-boosting effects.

5. Music at 60 beats-per-minute is required to put the brain in a “bright and breezy” frame of mind. In this state your thinking and creativity are said to be easier.

6. Eno’s “Music for Airports” has been noted as being useful for serious studying and deep concentration. This music was designed to relax stressed out travelers at the airport and put them at ease.
